Data governance helps organizations manage their information and answer questions about business performance, allowing them to better understand data, and govern it to mitigate compliance risks and empower information stakeholders.
Checklist: Building an Enterprise Data Governance Program
- Identify employees that are already passionate about data.
- Develop a key group of passionate data people that understand the needs. Start meeting, strategizing, and creating the justification for data governance.
- Agree on a definition of data governance for organization. What is in, what is out?
- Identify where your company currently stands in data governance, while keeping in mind your master data management plan, data quality goals, data stewardship, data lineage, and metadata. Then, prioritize where you want to be.
- Start to develop a data governance framework.
- Describe the needs in terms of real problems, in business terms. For example, a data quality issue with a specific project, multiple definitions for the same metric, two reports that should say the same thing but don’t, specific project with unclear decision rights on data.
- Add a projected ROI on solving individual issues. For example, the amount of time saved by analysis of data is managed appropriately, regulatory issues avoided, or patient safety issues avoided. Project real dollars that would be seen on a budget report.
- Execute your first project, measure the impact, and tell the story to business stakeholders.
- Take a data inventory and outline the data ecosystem.
- Agree on roles and responsibilities and build out data steward enablement program.
